Further General information on the National Park, the moorland area and the adjacent countryside and coastline, including the major towns of Whitby (home of Captain Cook), Stokesley,Malton, Scarborough, Thirsk (home of James Herriot), Pickering, Northallerton, Helmsley and the innumerable villages in the many dales can be obtained from the following websites. Public transport is run by many varied companies, some of which are abysmal and show little sign of improving. Train operators include Northern Rail, they operate the Middlesbrough to Whitby service, the North York Moors Railway operates (usually steam hauled) the Pickering to Grosmont service, and run some steam into Whitby. East Coast Main Line services to York, Thirsk and Northallerton are now operated by East Coast, Transpennine, Virgin & Grand Central. Bus and coach services are spasmodic and the National Park operates a 'Moorsbus' service, with routes covering almost the whole of the National Park--unfortunately this only operates in summer and then only on Sundays, apart from a period in the height of summer. The future of this is uncertain due to government spending cuts. North Yorkshire County Council have developed a new website called Public Transport Information, and it appears to work.
Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton-le-Hole supposedly has a permanent exhibition about the Lyke Wake Walk & the former Lyke Wake Club, this was officially opened on 26th October 2008. Read More about it.

Although SCARBOROUGH BOROUGH COUNCIL and REDCAR & CLEVELAND BOROUGH COUNCIL both have similar websites they don't appear interested in communications and have not responded to requests for information for the services they offer. Another similar service was YORKSHIRE TOURIST BOARD, they now seem to have become unobtainable, no idea where they are, if they exist, or what they offer.

The Lyke Wake Company Limited does not recommend any particular accommodation or camp sites, but it has come to our attention that Bill Cowley's former office at Potto Hill, where most of his books were written and where many of the former club 'Mid-Summer Wakes' were held is now a self catering holiday cottage.
Lyke Wake Cottage.
This delightful cottage was the original farm house dating back to the 18th century & has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The cottage gets its name from the Lyke Wake Walk which was started by Bill Cowley in the 1950's, and who owned the farm at the time.
Hillside Caravan Park is a new purpose built 5 acre site situated on a farm just to the east of Knayton, North Yorkshire, just off the A19 about six miles south of Osmotherley. Children & dogs welcome but no camping.
And of course there's always the Lion Inn at Blakey for food, drink, accommodation & camping.
